Post subject:  Displaying exit numbers / route direction

Hello - just started using navit on my TomTom and quite great!

Problem I've come across is that when driving on the highway Navit will simply tell you when to exit, but doesn't provide any exit number or other info to ensure you know what exit to get off at. This is normally OK, but can be confusing when 2 exits are VERY close together.

All of the highway ramps in my area are not names in OSM, so there is nothing that comes up for that information, but there are nodes with exit number. Is it possible to configure navit to display these exit number?

Also, here in the US, wour highways are typically given a direction like I-90 East and I-90 West (rather that towards a city name). Is it possible to set navit to display this direction?

Hm... Good questions. As far as I know Navit only tells you the names or numbers of the streets in which to turn, but not the exit number / compass direction, simply because this is not implemented in the code (yet). I can have a look and see whether this can easily implemented, at least I can try.

I think we already have a ticket on that topic, but I didn't found it yet :/

It's the #1174 "Ramp name and ref are not announced" ticket http://trac.navit-project.org/ticket/1174

We could easily add all nodes tagged as highway=motorway_junction and ref=* to binfile.

But I'm not very sure if our navigation code already processes nodes. Depending on this, it will be more or less complex to add navigational messages based on exit numbers. But that looks possible anyway.
