All,

I have an application that generates positions of other vehicles (from APRS data, for the story) and I would like to use navit to display these while I'm on the move (typically because I use navit while driving and would like to see where the other vehicles are on the map.

My initial thought was to generate a POI file with the positions in, and tell navit to reload the POI file from a dbus message. I have however looked at the dbus interface and didn't see anything that will tell navit to reload the POI file.

I would also like to have annotations displayed by the icon, taken from a possible comment in the POI file, but that does not seem to be possible, given another thread.

Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Fred

I know that cp15 is / was working on a fleet management system based on Navit... But I don't know the status of this project.

I guess you just have to store your POIs in navit's own "textfile" format (not in csv one). Navit will reread textfile map each time it accesses it. So it will be reloaded each time the screen is redrawn.

Sounds like a way forward. Thanks for that. I tried to look for some doc on that format but I could not find anything. Did I miss it? What file in the distribution should I look into for either an example or code that reads/writes such a file?

That's the format used to store bookmarks and recent destinations.
Some docs are at https://wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/Textfile (feel free to improve)
Code reading it is under navit/map/textfile

Excellent. Can I just create my own file and tell navit to use it? How?

[EDIT:]

Sorry, just found the answer at https://wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/Other_maps

Great. I have done a minor adjustment (moved an example) and added a new example to show how to do a POI.
