Ok, so you folks have been very helpful so far... onto my next issue. The shorelines on my map of Canada are looking really strange. In fact the Great Lakes look like a giant blue box if you zoom out. I have surmised the the shorelines are not working correctly. I have the latest version of both Navit running on my Raspberry Pi 3 and the maps downloaded from the Navit OSM server.
Any idea how to fix this?

This is a known limitation of navit.
There's a workaround which allows to use prerendered raster maps at low zoom levels, but it's not an out-of-the-box solution. But navit is anyway not an out-of-the-box product
At first, you may try a map from http://maps6.exp.navit-project.org/ . It's more than a year old, but it has coastline data popped up, which makes it look a bit better.
For the extreme low zoom levels, we have another solution: display a pre-rendered bitmap file.
Second stage needs support from navit graphics driver you use. See what you have in <graphics type="..."/> tag. Most probably, you'll have to use gtk_drawing_area to have this functionality. I don't know it it works on Raspbian.
May be you will be able to get details how to configure raster low resolution map at http://trac.navit-project.org/ticket/1285.
But do not attempt to apply the diff attached to the ticket, it's mostly for a different platform and is already applied. You'll need http://trac.navit-project.org/attachmen ... 5/map3.txt (attach it as map type="textfile") Also you'll need 3.zip file from that ticket with pre rendered png images, but it's not accessible anymore I think we'll fetch it from somewhere if it's actually needed.
