Is there a way to turn off automatic switching to night mode?
Night mode seems to activate way too early, when the sun is still high in the sky.
Even at night, the default colors are so low contrast that surface streets are near invisible.

Yes - in navit.xml, you can remove the nightlayout="Car-dark" from the <layout name="Car"... line.

What layout are we talking about with the low contrast? Maybe we need to improve it then.

If your night layout triggers to early (no idea if a constant local time is used or the sun rise/fall is calculated), this is a obvious bug.
How about if you fill out a bug ticket for that? http://wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/Reporting_Bugs

I'm useing navit on the Pandora, and have not yet gotten very far in modifying the UI (needs a bunch of work on the Pandora)
I've enabled the zoom in & out buttons because the default setup on Pandora has no scroll wheel.
I've not yet found a way to turn on a current speed display, or a next turn display that will show the name of the street of the next turn.

I'll look at what is involved in filing a bug report about the low contrast colors & night mode turning on hours before sunset.
edit: well I guess I won't be entering a bug report. There is no way to do so without signing up for some ID service which I won't do.

Thanks, I'll do that until night mode gets fixed.

You don't need to signup for some ID service to file a bug. Just use your wiki user page http://wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/User:DAP as OpenID to login.

Regarding custom OSD layouts and displaying information such as speed and street names, this page may help you:

http://wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/OSD

For my laptop layout, I use something like this to display current speed and next street:

Code:
<osd enabled="yes" type="text" x="600" y="-40" w="240" h="40" font_size="360" align="0" label="${vehicle.position_speed}" background_color="#00008080"/>
<osd enabled="yes" type="text" x="0" y="0" w="1278" h="40" font_size="360" align="0" label="${navigation.item[1].street_name} ${navigation.item[1].street_name_systematic}" background_color="#00008080"/>

You probably need to change size and position of these labels, as well as their color.

Oh ok, you are over from the Pandora community :) This is user:ABC at the pandi boards ;)

I will try to create a better navit.xml that fits the Pandora specific options. Unfortunatly till now I didn't had the time to do so and to learn enough about the pandora specific build process.
