Currently we have quite a number of colorful icons, which don't follow a general styling scheme. This makes the map view a bit confusing. Creating new may styles / color schemes is a bit difficult, because the icon colors are fixed and don't fit any background.

Since we are already using SVG for icons, it would be rather simple to single colored icons, which can be colored in whatever color scheme when they are converted to a raster format such as PNG. An example for this can be found here:

http://www.sjjb.co.uk/mapicons/contactsheet

However, the method used for coloring in this example is a bit ugly... IMHO it would be more elegant to color the SVG images using CSS, like this:

http://manuelhohmann.dyndns.org/osm/Ico ... prison.svg
http://manuelhohmann.dyndns.org/osm/Ico ... efault.css

This makes it rather easy to create icons with or without background and in different colors (one color per icon, but customizable) and sizes from only one SVG file. Unfortunately not many SVG renderers support this. I tried rsvg-convert and ksvg, and both failed. So far only Batik does the trick, and IMHO also the picture quality is much better than with the other renderers.

So, should we switch to Batik for rendering and use the other renderers only as a fallback?

The aproach sounds good and I very welcome a step offer a unified icon design.
I have no idea, but maybe we can add direct .SVG handling to Navit, too? Even this might not be usefull on low end devices, it might improve the quality e.g. for dynamic visualisations on smartphones (free zoomlevels, colouring, ...).

BTW. Could you already create a png32 Icon pack for me, so I can test the appeareance on my WinCE instance? I would like to check out the readibility/recognition for this small devices. Just a converted icon pack would be fine, I will do renaming manually (but maybe I can write a rename script, that works for you, too)

Actually SVG icons are already the default for the Linux built ;) But rendering requires more resources.

I can try to create some png32 icons for you. I haven't converted all icons shown on the link above to SVG+CSS yet, but at least some subset should soon be usable.

Here are some png32 icons, so you can test with them. I also tried to implement some regional variants (for example, there are hospital and pharmacy icons with either cross or crescent, and bank / ATM icons with different currency symbols). More is yet to come ;)

Thanks for that! I already checked them out and they look very good to me :)

As I told you at IRC, there are still some missing:
  • firefighter
  • touristinfo
  • peak
  • grocery
  • stadium
  • swimming, skiing
  • toilets
  • traffic signals (ones without colours)
  • wifi
  • zoo
Maybe you find the time and the right icons to add them once again ;)
