Hi all,

trying to use navit on kubuntu, I've run into a problem: The version available from the ubuntu repository is ancient (0.5.0r4776) and lacks many features, especially support for waypoints. Installing a recent .deb version fails with dependency problems (libfontconfig1 2.8 vs. 2.11).

Is there a way to get newer versions of navit working on ubuntu 12.04 LTS on i386?

Regards
Ektus.

Yes, actually I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 myself (although x86_64 instead). Probably the easiest way (and also the way I prefer) is to compile it yourself. Here is the list of dependencies you need:

http://wiki.navit-project.org/index.php ... pendencies

You can get the Navit source from SVN:

Code:
svn co svn://svn.code.sf.net/p/navit/code/ navit-code

This way you always have the most up to date version. We have no nightly builds for Ubuntu packages (yet) - but it would probably good to have this...

Okay, this did work. Installed the dependencies first with the command from the wiki, then downloaded source with svn, then changed into directory and ran cmake, make and make install:

Code:
~/$svn co svn://svn.code.sf.net/p/navit/code/ navit-code
~/$cd navit-code/trunk/navit
~/navit-code/trunk/navit$cmake .
~/navit-code/trunk/navit$make
~/navit-code/trunk/navit$sudo make install

Now the version number has increased greatly :)

Thank you very much!

It would be very good to have it, because the version delivered with ubuntu is very old and I was very disappointed that it is lacking support for waypoints. I absolutely need them for planning and to use local knowledge for tweaking the routes.

We try to get more up to date versions to the Linux repos, but this basically needs an switch back to a stable/unstable release schema and skipping the current release schema. I wish that we will finish this process this year :)
